Day 4 E.D.I.T.H. and Close Before You Doze

October 7, 2026

Every family should have a fire escape plan and practice it regularly. E.D.I.T.H. stands for Exit Drills In The Home and is a simple way to prepare your family to get out safely if a fire occurs.

To make a home fire escape plan:

  • Identify two ways out of every bedroom whenever possible.

  • Make sure doors, windows, hallways, and stairways are clear of clutter and easily accessible.

  • Choose a meeting place outside your home, a safe distance away from the building.

  • Make sure everyone in the household knows how to call 911.

  • Teach children how to recognize the sound of a smoke alarm and what to do when it sounds. Even when they are sleeping

  • Assign someone to assist young children, older adults, or anyone who may need additional help escaping.

Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. Practice at different times of the day, including at night.

When the smoke alarm sounds:

  • Get out and stay out.
  • Get low and move under smoke.
  • Feel doors before opening them. If a door is hot, do not open it. Use your second way out.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave, if possible.
  • Never use an elevator during a fire.
  • Once outside, never go back inside for people, pets, phones, or belongings.
Call 911 from a safe location.

You may have less than two minutes to escape a home fire. Knowing what to do before a fire happens can save valuable time and save lives.

“Close Before You Doze” is a helpful concept to give you more time during a fire. Keeping your bedroom door closed at night can slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving you more time to escape through another doorway or window.

Plan it. Practice it. Get out. Stay out.
